Nostalgia…

I want to create this for you.

Nostalgia is one of the best feelings. I understand that a pinch of sadness comes with nostalgia, but it makes the memory so much sweeter. I hope when you look at one of my pieces you feel it. My work is obviously not something from your past, but I hope that something about it- the flowers, the color, or the softness of the curves reminds you of a happy moment, or a person you love dearly. For me, and this was totally accidental, when I look at a tall, Jenni-inspired bouquet piece, I feel very calm. The colors remind me of the same pastels used in a book my mom read to me before bed countless times as a child. I suddenly remember particular smells and the texture of the fur on the stuffed bunny that I couldn’t sleep without for years. The piece paints a complete picture of a very happy and safe time in my life.

As a very wise friend put it, “nostalgia never gets old.” I couldn’t agree more. Regardless of what triggers the nostalgia, I can think of that moment in time and it will never make me anything but calm and happy.

For me, it would be the ultimate win to provide that same feeling for someone looking at something I’ve created. Maybe you see the flowers from your wedding, or, like me, something that used to grow in your grandparents’ backyard. Or maybe the colors match perfectly with your favorite spot in the house, a place where you go to relax or feel better when you aren’t at your best.

Maybe some day I will, but so far I’ve yet to create something that was meant to be a statement. Instead of a statement, I want to provide a feeling, a positive one. Whether that feeling is old or new, my plan and purpose with my work is for you to see it and visit a place in your mind where you feel happy and calm.
